Why we choose Organic Food?


More and more supermarkets and stores are offering organic food options. Even with restaurants, many of them support and showcase organic food and organic dishes. In addition, when shopping many of us prefer to buy organic food, but do we know why we prefer organic food instead? What is so special about organic food? Organic food is a very popular option, and many people love organic food. There are good reasons why organic food is popular, including the process of how organic food is produced, the environmental benefits and human benefits. So what exactly is organic food? To put it simply, organic foods are food that is freshly produced or processed with organic farming techniques, such as natural pesticides and fertilizer only and is not genetically modified.

How Does Organic Work?

When we think of organic products, we often think that it is a natural way of growing and producing. This is true, however, it doesn’t mean that organic food does not include pesticides and herbicides. In addition, depending on the country, there are different regulations on how much pesticides and herbicides or what type of pesticides and herbicides are allowed when growing organic produce. Instead of using synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, organic vegetables, fruits, and crops use natural methods, such as animal manure and so on.

For conventional food, farmers often prioritize mass production, and to ensure the most harvest, farmers would use synthetic pesticides and fertilizers to ensure the crop grows the most and best for maximum profit. However, the amount of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers used is not good for the soil and the farmers that have to spray the chemicals. Whereas organic food, they value the quality of the food with more natural methods and the quality of life for the farmer by reducing the amount of harsh chemicals the farmers would be exposed to. In addition, it can reduce the chance of contaminating the soil and is much better for the environment. As for other organic food products, this means the food product is not genetically modified or injected with artificial hormones and antibiotics. Organic food is one of the most natural ways of food production commercially.

Oftentimes when people think of organic food, people imagine vegetables or fruits. However, that is not the case, there are organic meat and fish, bread, and so on. Yes, there are organic meat, fish, and dairy products. You must be wondering how can meat be organic? Well, organic meat just means the animals were raised without artificial hormones and antibiotics injected. In addition, organic meat means the animals were fed with organic feed and have higher chances where the animals are free to roam around. Just like organic meat, organic dairy products are produced by animals that are free of any artificial injections and which can have more nutritious factors. As for organic seafood, it usually means wild caught seafood compared to farmed seafood. Because farmed seafood can be fed with a special diet that includes hormones or artificial additives. While these are the main types of organic food, and having organic food has many benefits.

Benefits of having Organic Food

There are many benefits with organic food, benefits for the farmers, the environment, and the consumers. First, let’s start with the benefits of organic food for farmers. Organic food means the vegetable and fruit farmers are less likely to be exposed to harmful pesticides and have a healthier lifestyle. For dairy and meat producers, the farmers are likely to have healthier animals and produce higher quality meat. By reducing the number of artificial injections, there is a chance to reduce the chance of the animals being caused by diseases. Which is also a benefit for the consumers. It means there is less chance of food-borne illness, less residue of pesticides, herbicides that can remain in the food we eat, and better quality of food. Last, organic food is good for the environment in many ways. For example, fewer soil contaminations, fewer chemicals in the soil, and depending on the crop, less water usage.

Organic food is a great choice and it makes sense why we often gravitate towards organic food instead. With so many beneficial factors, organic food can make a difference.
