Gomi-Pit Bar: Raising Awareness

The local governing Musashino city in Japan decided to raise awareness of the amount of trash that is produced and educate people about the waste management system and the effect trash have on our environment. It was a temporary event and people were selected through lottery system to be able to watch the trash go through the disposal process. As part of the experience, the visitors would tour around the waste management facility, understanding what happens to the trash after disposal. With the machineries, one could easily see the filtering of the different types of trash. Not only did this experience showed people how waste management worked, it also raised awareness and inspired people to reconsider how the disposal of waste and how much waste they are producing. What is waste management?
If you are still not sure what waste management is here is a simple definition:
Waste management is the collection, transportation, and disposal of waste.
However, the term waste management is actually a very broad term, as it also includes process of recycling, incineration, reusing of waste and many other aspects. Depending on the place, every country or even every local government have a different system of waste management. In addition, public waste management and commercial waste management sometimes are separated too. Waste management helps us regulate and manage waste that might ends up in the environment as pollutant or cause pollution and it is also a way to know how much waste we are producing. Waste management is a big part of our everyday life, with waste management, the city can be kept cleaner, take care of the environment and the overall city atmosphere.
Why is waste management necessary
Waste management is very important. Every single day, you produce a certain amount of trash and waste, that includes sewage and so on, so imagine there was not management of all the trash you produce and then think about all the other people on earth. Places would be filled with trash and waste everywhere and it can be quite dirty and very unhygienic. Waste management is needed to help us control and manage the amount of waste we produce daily. To keep the place clean, however, some waste management methods are actually causing more harm, such as air pollution, and destroying lands with landfills. With better waste management and understand of waste, we can reduce the problems such as air pollution from incineration, excessive amount of waste at the landfills and trash ending up in the ocean.
Types of Waste Management
There are different ways to manage the waste, such as solid waste and liquid waste are done very differently, but both are very important. In addition, depending on if it is commercial waste or public waste, there are different faciliaties used to manage. Depending on the different type of waste, solid, liquid, organic, or recyclable, there are different procedures. For example, solid waste are often incinerated to reduce their size, however, the ashes and gas produced in this process can cause air pollution. While inefficient or illegal dumping of liquid waste can cause polluted river, lakes and ocean. On the bright side, organic or biodegradable waste can be breaked down and used as nutrient for agriculture. In addition, with the technology, there are special types of bio-plastic that can be broken down and produce bio-gas that can be repurpose to energy and the remainants can become fertilizer. While commercial and public are different because commercial waste are often much more controlled or needs special prodecure in terms of transportation and disposal.

With deeper understanding of waste management, we can further understand the impact we have on the environment through our trash.
